Caution And Troubleshoot For GPS Tracker

GPS tracker works on the signal received from GPS satellites. These signals are very weak in nature in comparison to GSM(mobile phones) signals. One can expect good GPS signals only under open and clear sky. Under clear open sky the exact location of tracker with accuracy error of 5 to 10 meters can be achieved.

But if the tracker is under the Concrete cover(like inside the house or under the bridge) or any type of metal cover(like metal box) the GPS signal goes weaker and sometimes no signal.Which will increase the margin of accuracy error up to few hundred meters depending upon how weak the signal on that location is.

It is also important to note that GPS signal manages to pass thru without much loss of signal strength through glass, fibre, leather, polymers or clothes. But GPS signal is not able to pass through any type of metal, any type of concrete cover or trees. Best performance of GPS signal is under open clear sky.

1. Keep the tracker away from direct sunlight, or any place which is over-heated or over-cooled.

2. GPS Tracker is a delicate electronic device and needs to be handled with good care, also don’t try to shake it violently.

3. Protect it from dust and liquids including water.

Troubleshoot:

General:

  • No GSM Signal: Make sure that SIM is activated by using SIM with a mobile phone and then insert it back into the tracker properly as shown in the user manual.

 Personal Tracker:

  • Not receiving SMS from tracker:
    • Send SMS command check123456 to the tracker and you should get reply back about status of tracker as below explained. This command can be sent by any mobile.
      • Battery remaining
      • GPS signal strength
      • GSM signal strength
      • GPRS on/off (Not used for personal tracker)
    • If you don’t get the response back means
      • Either tracker battery is over
      • Or there is no GSM signal available, check above the GSM signal strength.
      • Or Tracker SIM is running out of balance to send back the SMS, to confirm this do a small recharge of 10 to 20 Rs for tracker SIM and try again.
    • Need to ensure that there is no mobile network issue while sending SMS to the tracker.
    • Need to remember that tracker will only reply back if the call made from the configured admin mobile numbers only.
    • Make sure that admin number is correctly configured by going back to the SMS history for the SMS sent to the GPS tracker for admin mobile number configuration. Also ensure that you have received the acknowledgement from tracker for admin configuration. These admin mobile numbers you setup while configuring admin for the tracker. Check Personal tracker configuration guide for more detail.

Vehicle Tracker:

  • Not able to view vehicle movement on the map:
    • Possible reasons are
      • SIM is running out of balance
      • Or tracker is not able to receive power from vehicle when ignition is on, it means loose connection or power supply problem
      • Or there is no mobile network or GPRS is disabled to SIM
      • Or where the tracker is installed into the vehicle, tracker is not able to receive proper GPS signal
    • Follow the below steps to solve the problem
      • Start engine of the vehicle. That will ensure that tracker is getting proper power supply under open sky.
      • If SIM can accept call then make call to the tracker and tracker should reply back SMS about current location.
        • If tracker is not ringing means power is not going to the tracker and somewhere power supply connection is loose.
        • Or if tracker is ringing but don’t get SMS response back means SIM is running out of balance.
        • If both the things are not an issue, follow below next step to send SMS command to the tracker to find any other issue.
      • Send SMS command check123456 to the tracker and you should get reply back about the status of tracker.
        • Battery remaining
        • GPS signal strength
        • GSM signal strength
        • GPRS on/off

        If you don’t get the response back means

        • Either tracker SIM is running out of balance , to verify this put minimum top up recharge of 10 or 20 Rs and try send SMS command check123456 .
        • If GPS is off means that tracker is not able to receive GPS signal and re-consider about the location where the tracker is installed into the vehicle
          • GPS signal is not able to pass through any type of metal cover, any type of concrete cover or trees.
        • Or there is no or very weak GSM signal available or GPRS is off, For GPRS off you need to check with your service provider as GPRS(2G/3G data) communication is made disabled by your network provider.
        • Or there is no power supply to tracker even if the vehicle is started. For that you need to check for loose connection or fuse attached with tracker is working properly.
      • Make sure that when ignition is on, tracker starts blinking every 3 seconds otherwise there is a possibility of loose connection.
      • Also make sure if the  APN is properly configured as explained in installation guide of vehicle tracker and you have received the acknowledgement from tracker.
      • Go to manage devices under platform menu and check for due to some reasons this particular tracker is made inactive by Connect My World System Administrator.
      • If there is locations not available because of GSM network unavailability can be reloaded from tracker for specific date from tracker
        • Call our support center or write email to us and we help you to load the missing locations(if any) from tracker.  
      • Some times after changing the SIM card few settings of the tracker might require the resetting to provide the location in frequent intervals. In this situation when vehicle is on the move call tracker directly and the tracker should be able to send the location SMS to caller phone and also to the server but not in frequent interval of 1 minutes to the server after that.
          • Setting for sending the location data to server in every 1 minutes and time zone as below. Send below SMS commands to the tracker.

          • It is important to note that for fix command tracker will not send any acknowledgement but time zone command will send the confirmation as time ok! This time zone setting is applicable for users in India.
      • Also after doing all above mentioned steps this if the tracker is not showing into the map, call us and we will make it working for you. 
  • Not receiving CMWALT SMS alerts from CMW Platform:  Apart from the above possible reasons check for your SMS credit with CMW platform under Manage Profile and that might require refilling. SMS credit can be purchased directly from the Connect My World platform.
